Indoor Culture

Strawberry milk and common phalaenopsis orchids are at the heart of Indoor Culture. Delicate, feminine, and sweet, while simultaneously cultured indoors in controlled factory farms and nurseries, dyed, flavored, and scented artificially, there is a marked shift between the origin and perception of the final products. It is in this inconsistency, in this blur between substance and surface, potency and packaging, that I both identify with and have been drawn in by.

Materiality is a prevalent factor throughout the Indoor Culture Series. Each work aims to engage the senses, with hopes to to confuse, conflate, and embellish upon. Artificial strawberry scent fills the air, enhancing the strawberry milk and attributing a flavor to both vinyl and video alike. Lustrous gold, sparkling glitter, soft, fleshy orchid petals, and syrupy-sweet strawberry milk seem to whisper in your ear, blending the line between authenticity and artifice, daring you to reach out and touch.
